This album is a wonderful display of the fertile potential of pop/rock at the beginning of the 90s, but didn't seem to find the wider audience that it so richly deserved. Kevin Gilbert, formerly of Giraffe, but well-respected in progressive rock circles for his performances of Genesis and Gentle Giant material, here teams up with Pat Leonard, famous for his collaborations with Madonna, and the results are dynamic, witty and beautifully produced. The expression in Gilbert's vocals is often moving, accompanied by keyboard and guitar-based rock music, with definitive contributions from all the musicians: Brian MacLeod (drums), Guy Pratt (bass) and Tim Pierce (guitar) and producer Brian Bottrell. The subject matter is diverse and interesting, never dealing with the issues it addresses in a single way, and often full of irony. A diverting and clever album that deserves to be remembered. Toy Matinee deserves to be remembered as one of the best team projects ever put together under the watchful eye of American Pop Music. Sadly, founder Kevin Gilbert has passed away. To all you who see this note, not unlike a message in a bottle, I say, go forth and seek the music of Kevin Gilbert. If Toy Matinee won you over at all, you will find gifts aplenty in the other music written by or with this fellow. Look for albums by Sheryl Crow, David Baerwald, Linda Perry, Susanna Hoffs, and most of all, look for Kevin Gilbert's solo album, "Thud." Insist on the expanded version, which features a 5-song EP including Kevin's awesome version of "Kashmir." This man had more to give than what we took!

I just picked up the reisue of Toy Matinee and it has been several years since my tape of it wore out. I gotta say this is one of the best albums I have ever heard. The production and the splendid fretless bass work is still so fresh. For any bass play this is one heck of a bass lesson. It is some very clever and tasteful bass playing. Not to sell the rest of the band short by any means because the whole album is just a fantastic piece of work.

There are some guitar tabs at kevingilbert.com - Jenny ledge, Things she said, and We always come home. Not sure how good they are, but it's a start. BTW - I have yet to play the CD for anyone who hasn't loved it.
