Comments for Urban Dance Squad, Persona Non Grata

E-MAIL: fwalton@world.nad.northop.com
(Let's try that again) Urban Dance Squad doesn't fit neatly into Hard Rock. Their Hard, their Funky, they Rap and they Scream. Whatever works. This album is totally different from their previous two mellow ones, (for one thing the D.J.'s gone). For anybody that remembers the song 'Deeper Shade of Soul' this is a whole different animal, more like Rage against the machine. Check it out. It Rocks.

Well, I just got this album an hour ago, but I loved both of their previous outings, so I picked it up the day it was released. fwalton is right; this rocks, but to be fair, UDS has always rocked. There was definitely more variety on their previous albums, but they did have songs like Mr. EZWay, Brainstorm on the UDS, Medicine Man, etc. I sort of miss the eclecticism of their previous efforts. I mean, they had hard rock, funk, ska, blues, and country-ish tunes all on one album. Still, it is also good to see them strip down and focus themselves. I just sort of wish they hadn't become -so- Rage Against the Machine. I think the world can only handle -one- Rage.

It is a sort of sin to compare the UDS with rage against the machine! Before doing so, consider this: Rage against the machine is a consequence of the UDS. The members of rage met each other during a concert of UDS! and decided to produce that kind of music. The UDS is just original- they started during an open jam session in 1986 and many say they are the first cross-over band; others say one can blaim the RHCP's for that. Anyway they were one of the pioneers of todays popmusic!

I think they fall into the same catagory as Rage. If you know anyone else that sounds like Rage could you please email me? So far, I have found Deftones, Korn, Inside Out, UBC, Downset, and Stuck Mojo. Later..................Josh
