Comments for Yes, Going For The One

This is considered by many to be the last of the "great" YES albums. An absolute essential album in all aspects, but especially for the epic "Awaken", a musical masterpiece.

A wonderful album, all of the songs are excellent, especially "Awaken", one of the greatest pieces in their discography. I find fantastic several features, the church organ in "Awaken" and "Parallels", the guitar playing in "Turn of the century", the two voices counterpoint in "Going for the one", the melody of "Wonderous stories", etc. This is definitely my favourite line-up, with again Rick Wakeman, and with Alan White taking the place of B. Bruford since "Topographic oceans" on. I wouldn't so sure that this represents THE LAST great YES album... maybe there can be one more, later, quite different but equally valid even if somehow Dramatic ... GL

INSPIRATION is what "YES" is all about, that's where their great unique rock and roll comes from. Like "Yes", my primary source of inspiration is the GREAT SPIRIT potentially inside all of us. Among my finest influences in reaching some of that spiritual potential have been the great rock & roll group "Yes", and the spiritually inspiring books written by "KEN CAREY". How do you rate inspiration? "Yes" & "Ken Carey" get 10's from my heart. -Ed McConnell

The title track is decent hard rock but basically a Led Zeppelin imitation. "Parallels" sounds much better live on "YesShows". "Awaken" is great, an intricate work containing some fantastic riffs, ; I would note though that if you get the boxed set that the interesting parts of this album are already in your posession.

"Awaken", "Wonderous Stories" and "Turn Of The Century" are great. "Parallels" and "Going For The One" aren't bad either. So this is a very good Yes album. It should have something for everyone: "Going For The One" is straight Rock 'n' Roll, "Awaken" a typical Yes epic, "Wonderous Stories" is a soft rock ballad which should appeal even to the average pop listener.

Going For the One is a fantastic work of musical art! Zepplinish? Maybe, but Steve Howe's playing is cleaner than anything Jimmy Page has ever produced (and this is coming from a Zep fan). Going For The One leaves me speechless. A definite "10".

I love Yes and just about everything they've ever produced (I'm a little less excited about the Trevor Rabin albums). Going For the One is a masterpiece, IMHO. I can listen to it over and over again. Although live versions of these songs have been very satisfying for me to listen to, they can't get much better...sound much better than the original versions. It's sort of like Led Zep's "Stairway to Heaven," the original version. Could they really improve on the original? I doubt it. If you are not familiar with Going For the One, listen to it, get used to it, and just see how perfect songs like "Turn of the Century" and "Awaken" are. They're rock 'n' roll masterpieces, I tell you! Although I couldn't do without a number of the Yes albums, this one you'll have to pry from my cold, dead fingers! - Thanks.

This is the last of their GREAT albums. Even if it contains tha fabulous "Awaken", the first side shows the style they are going to adopt on 'Tormato'. I think this is the inflexion point in their creation.

this album marks the return of Rick (ice skating gig didn''t go too well). i think this is where they start to slip a bit in terms of musical ideas. the majority of the album (especially "Awaken") sounds too forced, like they''re consciously trying to recapture the musical spirit that they''ve lost. "Turn of the Century" is the standout beautiful song here, and in it Jon returns to the story- telling lyric style. But on "Awaken" and "Parallels" the music sounds too messy, like each member did a cut-and- paste job to combine the music together. Overall it''s an "okay" but non-essential listen.

I couldn't agree more with the reviewer who precedes me. Forced. Boring! By no means a complete throwaway, though. The title track is an obvious keeper.

This is certainly one of yes's best albums. "Awaken" is seriously the best peice of music every written.... well, except for stairway to heaven of course.

This album opens a whole new chapter in the Yes legacy since "Relayer", with Rick Wakeman's remarkable homecoming to the group. Yes has freshened their style on this album by applying a wider variety of performing techniques from those used on their previous albums. Some of the things they did different on this album was combining shorter tracks that could get more airplay with two longer ones to satisfy the Yes fans with the long play appetite, and adopting some styles that are not so typical to the traditional Yes music listener (ex. the skateboarding music intro to "Going For The One"). The overall sound quality on this album is a lot crisper than than from their previous albums, with the help of the development of Dolby B sound. I think that the album cover, however, could have done a lot better without the naked man eminating plasma sparks. What was the cover artist thinking about here? And, I really don't notice any Led Zeppelin immitations here at all-it's an apples-and-oranges comparisin. By the way, The Yesshows concert in San Diego during this time was awsome.
