Comments for Young, Neil, Freedom

This album brought Neil Young renewed acceptance after a series of poorly-received albums. Seen as a sort of comeback album, _Freedom_ incorporates many facets of the classic Neil Young "sound:" with piano ballads and the anthem-like Rockin' in the Free World.

Rockin' in the Free World is the definitive rock anthem, embraced by many around the world as a glimmer of hope in a world gone wrong, plus Pearl Jam also covered it.

One of Neil's best albums. Crime in the City is one of his best ever songs, in a slightly softer and longer version here than the one in the Weld album with Crazy Horse.

Many people seem to feel thta this was Neil's comeback album. I would agree that it is one of his better albums. I feel his return to popular culture, for as I see it, Neil never had to comeback from any down spot, although, LIFE was not his finest and maybe a couple of songs on LANDING ON WATER were a bit hastily put together, started with THIS NOTES FOR YOU, and continued from there. I do enjoy the fact that Freedom did represent a strong return to social critic, which as somebody once mentioned to me that he may have become part of the establishment with his comments around REAGON in the 80's. I think maybe Neil started to become the angry old man. Similar to Lou Reed on his Album New York. Maybe a part of that old hippie generation did not sell out afterall. I guess chasing after the shiney flashy material objects wore thin on Neil's ends.

Although the 80's are in some ways an under-rated part of NY's output, this album (deservedly so) re-established Neil in the mainstream as a major player.Up ON BROADWAY, some felt Neil was HANGIN' ON A LIMB and was TOO FAR GONE, and took a WRECKING BALL to his career. DON'T CRY, SOMEDAY CRIME IN THE CITY will be NO MORE, and THE WAYS OF LOVE will win out, even in old ELDORADO town. But most importantly, Neil set a course for the 90's and has been ROCKIN' IN THE FREE WORLD ever since.

A great album that got Neil Young in the spotlight again, and back on the radios. It has some great lyrics and great music, and his best album since Rust Never Sleeps. It is comprable to Rust Never Sleeps in the sense it has some great acoustic songs, along with some great hard rock. An album with more great songs than just about any of his albums, including Rockin' In The Free World, Crime In The City, No More, and Too Far Gone. One of his best.

i saw patti smith when she backed dylan at melbourne park and she thrased rockin in the freeworld to an inch of its rambling, abrasive, tortured life....ya gotta love this!!!
A 10! I could almost consider this as Neil's masterpiece. He does a great job of mixing acoustic and electric music. *Ron Haynes, Jr. Age: 26 Clarkesville, Ga.
