Comments for Young, Neil, Mirrorball

E-MAIL: elindsko@ub.d.umn.edu
This album is a departure from past Neil Young, although progresses in a positive way from "Sleeps With Angels". For some reason I really like the raw, noisy sound that reminds me of "Free World". Sure there is some backing from Pearl Jam but it is NOT A PEARL JAM ALBUM by any means. This is just Neil Young doing what he always does, make a great album that is vastly different than anything before.

What a shame that the normally great Neil Young opted to ditch his long-time backup band for the members of Pearl Jam. While "Mirrorball" manages to prove that Young can still write great rock songs, it is brought down by the obviously limited talent of Eddie Vedder and company.

This is definitely the album we were looking forward to. A great album all-round, from the classic Neil words & guitar work to Pearl Jam's excellent backing & powerful grooves. Infact, power is what sets this apart from "Sleeps With Angels", which inspite of being a great record wasn't of the same standard as Neil's.

This one proves that Neil is consistently making the best music of his career right now by following the brilliant Sleeps with Angels with this album. Because of Brendan O'Brien's production it has a slightly newer feel to it, but that is a good thing because Mirror Ball sounds better than any of his albums except for Ragged Glory. Possibly his 2 best songs are on this one, I'm the Ocean and Scenery, and Pearl Jam are the perfect band for these songs. They bring a brutally heavy, rythmic quality to his music, something never accomplished before with any of his bands. Crazy Horse simply do not play with such tightness. If he keeps making records this good, we are in for a real treat. Neil also plays some of his best guitar on Throw your Hatred Down and Scenery.

I'm The Ocean is my all time favorite Neil Young song.

'Throw Your Hatred Down' and 'I'm the Ocean' make this a great album. Pearl Jam energizes without overtaking Neil's playing. A good, 'crunchy' album with raw emotion and impassioned musicianship.

The album for me, gets lost in the shuffle. The drumming and ringing of Pearl Jam in the background is "Alternative" overkill. The true talent on this album proved to be Neil, unfortunatly someone forgot to turn up his vocals.

Forget Downtown, I'm the Ocean is the electric 90's Ambulance Blues hangover tune. Scenery is great as well.
The album done with Pearl Jam as a back-up band. Wow.

Neil Young and Pearl Jam Combine to put forth an amazingly uplifting and poetic album anchored by the strength of New Pearl Jam addition "Jack Irons" on the drums.(Led Zeppelin fans eat Mirrorballs dust!)
