Comments for Big Sugar, Hemi-Vision

E-MAIL: gustavo.miranda@utoronto.ca
HemiVision is by far the best album Big Sugar has come out with in terms of cohesiveness and consistency. The heaviness of this album might be too much for those people who still consider Gordie and his boys a "blues" band, though by no means should this band be labelled anythging else, especially not alternative. Diggin' a Hole is perhaps the best single they've released since Ride Like Hell, though songs like Opem up Baby, Joe Louis, and If I had My Way far surpass Diggin'a Hole in terms of that special Big Sugaresque quality that keeps the band in a league all of their own. The album as a whole is perhaps ten years ahead of anything being produced today by any other band. In time Gordie Johnson might be regarded as a musical visionary of the scope of Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. However, without a doubt, the best aspect of the album is the perfect blend between what has to be the best bass playing around (by Gary Lowe), with tight vocals, guitars that are not too overpowering (as in Dear MF), and Kelly's Harp. Also, this album is the first Big Sugar release that can be considered as a Big Sugar, the band, album, rather than a Gordie Johnson and miscellaneous release. Added to the solidification of the band is the songwriting. Instead of relying heavily on covers and trad songs, or on Gordie's own songs, Hemi-Vision is entirely a group effort with an excellent air of originality.

I Would like to know why I can''t get this cd anywhere. I have searched all over the net and in every music store I have been in and the only cd I can find of Big Sugar is 500 Pounds, which I already own. Is Hemi Vision only sold in Canada? If it is, I will personally go there and buy it.
Big Sugar fans won`t be disappointed! The same heavy-duty blues that Gordie and the boys are known for, plus a little more exploration of the reggae side of the band that is beginning to develop. Best tracks on the albumare "Diggin` A Hole", "Empty Head", and "Opem Up Baby", which has been a live staple for the last couple of tours.
