Comments for Spinanes, Manos

The Spinanesı large sound, made up of raw, rattling guitar chords stretched over pounding drums, rivals that of bands twice as big. Both musicians (Rebecca Gates on guitar, Scott Plouf on drums) add just enough to their parts to fill up the space usually occupied by a bass. In fact, the first time I heard their album I didnıt know they were only a two-piece until I read the liner notes. Their live shows evidence the tremendous conviction and dedication they channel into their music. Their savagely pounded instruments produce a dazzling array of sounds at once wrenching and sublime. Gatesı voice alternately strains and slides over new interpretations of the melodies, each one changing as the music demands it.She twirls around the stage in one of her signature thrift store dresses, her guitar an extension of her body. Behind her, Plouf viciously attacks the drums, transcending exhaustion to keep the pulsing rhythms tight and constant. Gates and Ploufıs interaction with each other evidences an intimacy only two can have. Both know exactly what the otherıs next move will be and they communicate entire sentences in a single glance. Buy this album. Their next record is due in February 1996.
