This album was orginally mean't to be the follow up to 'Bat Out Of Hell' but because Meat Loaf pulled out at the last minute, Steinman decided to sing the vocals himself. The album is very similar to 'Bat' with the same production team & musicans. Overall it is a very strong album, easily better than 'Bat'. Steinman isn't a very strong vocalist, in fact he is a bit of an aquired taste. But he puts so much emotion into his performance that it would put most other performers to shame. A lot of the material on this album has been used again, mainly on Bat2, but Barbra Steisand covered 'Lost in the Dark'. The Bonnie Tyler song 'Holding Out For A Hero' is based on 'Stark Raving Love'. If you are a fan of Steiman's music there a number of sites dedicated to him. Go to the Danish Jim Steinman page (very good) and you will find many more links from there. If you like 'Bat' or 'Bat2', buy 'Bad For Good'.

In my opinion "Bad for Good" is the best song Jim Steinman has ever written. It was a pity that Meat Loaf covered a number of the songs on this album. I don't think that Meat's version of "Rock and Roll Dreams" came near Jim's own rendition - compare the two versions, Meat's has been slightly re-written and is the better song, but there's no doubt in my mind whhich is the better sung.

This is one hell of a good album. The lyrics are imense and the performance by Jim is awesome. A few of the songs are now dated, mainly because they that have been remade by other artists. The likes of "Bad For Good", "Surf's Up" and "Left In The Dark" however are imho three of the best written and performed songs of all time. This album is a must for Bat1&2 fans.

Top album. Certainly my all time favourite J.S. recording. All Jimmy stuff is good ,but this one takes the cake. P.S. Hunky babes like Him are not found in Australia either. Sue.

One of the best albums ever! 'Stark Raving Love' must rate as one of Steinman' best. Try listening to it after Queen's 'Death on two legs...' - Awesome pair of songs!

Nearly everyone whoīs been giving their opinions this far thinks itīs one of Steinmanīs greatest recordings. I have to disagree. Although "Bad for good" and "Left in the dark" are two of Steinmans best songs, the rest lacks of something. I canīt put my finger on it, but I feel that "BAT" from the beginning to the end feels more like a classic, the songs are more real and emotional. Like "Lost boys and golden girls", "Stark Raving love", "Rock n Roll dreams" and "Surfīs up" donīt really feel like TRUE Steinman songs. They arenīt that extremed as Steinmansongs often are and they havenīt really got that "something" that the songs on Bat has. "Dance in my pants" feels like some kind of fast-made follow-up to "Paradise". But of course the album is one of the all-time greatest, and itīs just that were talking Jim Steinman here, and therefore I expect a lot.

'Bad for Good' is one of the best albums ever released in pop music history, but I agree that it's a pity that Meat Loaf couldn't sing it. Even tho' Jim does a terrific job regarding expression and feeling. I find it funny that it took me a few years to realize that Rory Dodd sings a couple of songs, like 'Surf's up' or 'Lost Boys and Golden Girls' One hardly notices the difference. (For those of you who are not "Steinmaniacs": Rory is the all-time background vocalist for Steinman's fantastic productions and the co-singer of 'Total Eclipse of the Heart') 'Bad for Good' is an all-time classic and ought to be in every music conoisseurs colleccion and of course in their hearts! The remakes are without exception worse than the original even though I have to admit that Jim is violating 'Left in the Dark' rather than singing it. But he's so incredibly expressive! Not to be posted: This was a message from Germany/Frankfurt

Bad For Good by Jim Steinman Truly a powerful piece of music! Jim's best? Could be debated due to works like Bat 1 & Bat 2, not to mention Pandora's Box - Original Sin. I would have loved to have heard Meatloaf do the vocals back when this album was first released. Jim's a writer, not a singer. His vocals are an "acquied taste I suppose, though I do admit, tons of emotion are conveyed when he sings. Best Songs? #1 Bad For Good (powerful, powerful, powerful!!!) #2 Surf's Up (one of the all-time best power ballads!) #3 Out of the Frying Pan (so glad it resurfaced on Bat 2!) and the rest... excellently penned Steinman works. Final thought... It's a real shame that this album didn't "catch on" bigger than it did when it was first released back in the early 1980's. Great production, wonderful song writing, etc. should have meant more success following Bat I. If you don't own it...BUY IT NOW!!! RT Long time Steinmaniac!

i grew up with bat and bad for good.its a classic, better i feel than bat 2 certainly.bad for good is a top notch power rock anthem, lost boys is great but maybe meat sings this one better, as itwas originally written for him anyway. love and death, i and my buddies used to recite this in our early days of getting drunk. now thats rocknroll. rock n roll dreams is much better with jim as is left in the dark, surfs up. meats surfs up sucks.

I am a loafer @ Steinmaniac too but stunned to read that Meat Loaf could not sing Bad For Good as well as Steinman WHO CARES.Two of the Best ever musicians, writers. How many of you know that Celine Dions (It`s all Coming Back To Me Now)was writen by Steinman as well.Just sit back and listen (DEAD RINGER). Loafer Out
Very much in the style of "Bat out of hell" although lacking much of the strength of that album. The rumors are that MeatLoaf should have sung on this album as well, but due to bad health he was disabled and Jim chose to sing instead.
