Comments for Bey, Hakim, T.A.Z.

Anarchist philosopher Hakim Bey reding excerpts from his book/manifesto Temporary Autonomous Zone (T.A.Z.) with Bill Laswell`smusic at the background. Laswell`s music was mainly trance-sounding ambient with slight world music overtones (except the secondtrack which Buckethead provided some industrial ambient sounds). The music fits quite well with Bey`s words. But unlike WilliamS. Burroughs` Seven Souls or even the recent Paul Bowles` Baptism inSolitude, the music on this disc serves as a background to Bey`sleftfied commentary rather than Bowles or Burroughs` fictionalnarratives. Like a straighter and millitant Burroughs, Bey talked about many interesting things on the recording such as Chaos inthe universe, art as crime and vice versa, communication and transmission of messages in art, ancient Chinese secret societiesand their implication on contemporary marginal groups, the media`sprojection of law enforcenment etc. Quite hard to swallow for comformedears, but a welcome for those who wants to be challenged, both musically and intellectually.
