Comments for Carl Volk, Death of an Angel Tango

E-MAIL: carlvolk@intermind.net
Review by Fingerstyle Guitar magazine: Carl Volk''s self-produced Death of an Angel Tango might ruffle the feathers of the classical guitar elite, but that hasn''t stood in the way of the remarkable success he has enjoyed with this well-engineered recording. Volk has taken several pieces of the established guitar repertoire, including selections by Villa-Lobos and Ponce, and performed them with a touch of jazz, freeing himself from the rigid constraints of tradition. How refreshing! Rounding out the recording are original compositions, as well as Luiz Bonfa''s Morning of the Carnival. - James Jensen, Pickers'' Picks, May/June, 1996
Review of Death of an Angel Tango: It has been a long time since these ears have heard such exuberance on the Spanish guitar. This is a presentation that speaks eloquently in classical tones with just a touch of jazz. We move from Goya`s Toledo to Brazil to Mexico as Volk adeptly translates Villa-Lobos in traditional Segovian style, then moves on to Morning of the Carnival by Luiz Bonfá with the grace of a mythical bird. His provocative fingers then take us to the brilliance of Astor Piazzolla with La Muerte del Angel. I can only apologize that the list of exceptional music is too long to repeat here in it`s entirety, but if you have a passion for the fire of the inner soul and appreciate virtuoso guitar, this artist and album deliver. - Robert G. Wolf, June, 1996 (NAPRA Review)
