Comments for Shepard, Vonda, Vonda Shepard

When this album first appeared on Reprise Records in 1989 they released "Don`t Cry Ilene" as the first single...it looked as if a new major pop female artist was born. With catchy melodies, unique lyrics, and a voice not unlike a cross between Rickie Lee Jones and Amy Grant, Vonda was full of promise. Alas, the label didn`t promote her properly (if at all) and the album sank. Obviously, her more recent release, "It`s Good Eve," on Vesperalley Records, fared well enough to generate interest in this stellar debut, because her new label decided to re-release it. Thank goodness! Now the irresistible pop charms of "Don`t Cry Ilene," "I Shy Away," and "I`ve Been Here Before" won`t be lost forever. Nor will the beautiful ballads "Baby Don`t You Break My Heart Slow" (the album`s best tune) and "Looking for Something." The album is VERY pop, unlike the more alternative and pop/folk leanings of "It`s Good, Eve," but this album still deserves a listen.
