Comments for London, Julie, Love Letters

As the liner notes state, this album features Julie offering interpretations of some of the biggest hits from the time this album was recorded. But other people`s hits don`t necessarily translate into gold for people who cover them, and "Love Letters" is definitely one of Julie`s less-inspired works. She gives fine readings of "The Second Time Around," "Hey There," and the title track, and "Never on Sunday" gets a wonderful, playful arrangement. Also, Julie is clearly having fun with "Come On-a My House": once she improvises the line "I`m gonna give you...a pomegranite," in the lines that follow you can tell she`s stifling a mischievious laugh. However, "All the Way" and "Fascination" lack passion, and "Broken-Hearted Melody" proves that while Julie is a superior jazz vocalist, pop isn`t really her forte. "Love Letters" is a pleasant listen with nice moments, but not her best work.
