Comments for Cole, Natalie, Unforgettable...With Love

Natalie`s glorious initial forray into the timeless music of her legendary father, Nat King Cole. Natalie does sweet justice to some of Nat`s best loved tunes, and in many cases comes out on top of some of the tunes` former incarnations. Her reading of "The Very Thought of You" is sweetly longing, "Mona Lisa" is given a beautiful interpretation, and her "Lush Life" is especially lush. "Paper Moon," "Route 66," and "Don`t Get Around Much Anymore" all have genuine swing, and a couple of lesser-known standards, such as "That Sunday That Summer" and particularly "Too Young," are given gorgeous treatments topped off with sweetly heartfelt vocals. Of the album`s 22 tracks, only a couple could have been ommitted, such as "Avalon" and "Thou Swell," both faster tracks under two minutes each. They`re nice enough, but not entirely necessary. The album`s closer, however, the title track that merges Natalie`s voice with her father`s, is a jazz/pop joy to behold...the remastering of Nat`s voice is downright gorgeous, and the arrangement, particularly the lush string and sax solo, is sweetly seductive. Overall, this album stands out as one of the finest jazz projects recorded by a primarily pop singer. A fine project with a most apt title.
