The addition of the fairlight, a synthesizer capable of ''sampling'' natural sounds and distorting them, broadens Bush''s sound considerably. Introduced to the fairlight while providing backup vocals for Peter Gabriel''s third album (on No Self Control and Games Without Frontiers), Bush became enamored of it, then expert at it. This album showcases her first steps with the fairlight, as well as her first foray into ''layering'' her vocals into a backup choir. Her lead vocals are also much stronger here than on previous albums, and her songwriting delves into darker territories such as annihilation, pediphilia, ultimate motivation and death -- all captured in brightly instrumented, upbeat melodies, no less!
