Comments for Bush, Kate, The Dreaming

E-MAIL: NSRJM@NURSEPO.MEDCTR.UCLA.EDU
The Dreaming is Kate Bush's brief flirtation with rhythm over melody -- and an example of just what she is capable with a fairlight at hand. Influenced by Peter Gabriel's use of third world music as the backdrop for his songs, Bush goes him one further: each aboriginie rhythm, enhanced by 'sampled' door slams, animal sounds and her own multilayered voice IS the song. Unlike anything ever heard even on a Kate Bush album, these 10 songs were so alien in structure that her record company gave this album no support, U.K. radio barely played it, and after peaking at #3, it languished and fell off the U.K. chart. Ironically, it was the American press, heretofore unimpressed by Bush, who gave it the stellar reviews it deserves, and it is this album that gained Bush her American cult following. No matter how often you listen to this one, you'll always hear something new.

Boring comments usually start out with accolates such as: Briliant, original, inspired, complete whimsy, stunning, wonderful fidelity. The album is all the above. Of course, I didn''t understand anything until I found a web site which had the lyrics (some place related to MN-Cray Research). Yes, weird. What was she on at the time? 6/11/97
