Comments for Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, Lick My Decals Off, Baby

E-MAIL: pcurrie@idirect.com
Contrary and aqgreeably to the current comment This is Beefhearts best album seconded only by Trout Mask & Doc at the Radar Station The Captain has never been more concise and the band is challenged by the incedible drumming of Drumbo whom I believe is Art Tripp a Zappa alumni.(he also played on Trout Mask. The bass playing is extremely unorthodox which helps create one of the most unconventional sounding rythm sections yet it all works marvelously. Listen to the Petrified Forest for incredible unorthodox precision. This album is probably the most unified album the Captain ever released. As a huge Beefheart fan who always liked his most adventurous music this is it. Listen to Flash Gordons Ape & Japan in a Dishpan for The Captain at his best on the horn. This is Beefheart at a perfect ten. As usual the record companies don''t get it right as this is one of the hardest to find on CD.
WOW! This album`s actually as strong and as strange as "Trout Mask Replica". Because the band was down to one guitarist rather than two,the music looses some of the intertwining push that had previously been so enchanting. But they cope with this by becoming more of a dementedstraight folk-blues trip. this one`s even HARDER to get into than Trout Mask (it`s taken me years, personally) but if you do get into it you`ll appreciate itas a significant exp[ression of dadaism and musical freedom. I`m not sure it adds up to much in the end, and it`s extremely hard to get into this, but it is a hard-core expression of artfrom one of the great artists of our time.
