Comments for Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, Ice Cream For Crow

Just cause Doc was harder and Shiny Beast was the perfest turn around there's no rational reason to overlook this jem. Ice Cream ranks with the best he's done.

If you get it for one thing, get it to listen to a young Cliff Martinez wail on the drums before he hit with the Chili Peppers. What a difference in styles! A great album.
This is the swan song from the Captain, ably abetted by his Magic Band.I used to be a bit down on this record overall, thinking that it had less of a band sound to it.But recent listenings have suggested to me that this is brilliant, heady stuff. There`s a bit of a hillbilly/folk aspect to this one. Basically it`s brilliantly fragmented compositions played by a band which included some fine guitarists, and topped off with the unique poetic stylings of Captain Beefheart. This is one of his more serious and important records; as such, if you`re into artistic product, you should get it.
