Comments for Jacques & Nigel, Who's Too Old To Shock? (Single)

A daring follow-up to the landmark "naTiON sHOck!" LP. The most contemplative record from the duo to date, spanning the sultry swooning of "Cry" to the dark outcry of "Tax My Anguish." The two have shown they're not to be pigeon-holed...though admittedly, we could have lived without the near-20 minute disco/film noir/classical hybrid "Words Relating To Matter." A brave record, nonetheless.

This is none so bad as some may say. A very good next album. I enjoy this very much. This is a good turn for Jacques & Nigel.

Jacques & Nigel have made another useless record. It's an endurance test to see how far through you can get before being forced to turn off this album. "Supple Brainchild" and "Words Relating To Matter" are all over the place in terms of structure, and there's almost no trace of melody in most songs. It's like one big, horrible experiment gone wrong. Makes me miss "Metal Machine Music." Absolute f***ing rubbish.

Eccentric is surely a word that you can apply to Jacques & Nigel, but it's not always detrimental. I give them credit for at least attempting something more unique than their contemporaries, melodically, tonally and lyrically speaking. Just think of them as a more unhinged Steely Dan, and it will begin to make sense. Even "Handful of Biscuit" come across like a Fagen/Becker composition, circa "Gaucho." Although, I'm certainly unable to comprehend their reasons for tacking on a ZZ-Top cover version at the end of the LP...nonetheless, an album you'll find yourself going back to, should the mood strike you.

What the hell is this? Someone at a party told me these guys were like DMB...no way. Ridiculous tuneless songs and a ZZ-Top cover??! Weird...these guys are to weird.

"Jacques and Nigel rule," says Stephie Frommer. Actually, I'm just trying to get my name posted on the internet.
