Comments for Coltrane, John, Sun Ship

E-MAIL: BM_Sparks@acad.fandm.edu
This one deserves a listen on the sheer power of "Dearly Beloved" alone. "Sun Ship" is brutal and beautiful, and the rest are some of the most inventive Coltrane up to that time. A great record, but not the best.

Another great album from the greatest...

"Sun Ship" has on it some pretty intense playing, but it's worth checking out. Especially great is the way the rhythm section of Tyner, Garrison and Jones play with time on these recordings. They play fast, then they slow down. Listening to this album I have the feeling of falling down and down and down...or going up and up and up. No matter how you look at it, it's an album unlike any other one, by Trane or anyone else for that matter.

The whole album is great, but DEARLY BELOVED is, I think the most powerful composition of Coltrane at all.
Recorded in 1965. Not as free as "Stellar Regions", butmuch more layered and intense. A fine album (one of the lastwith the classic quartet).
