"Imperial Bedroom" is a lush, gorgeous, and deeply moving listening experience that should not be missed by fans of Beatlesque pop music.

Elvis does Cole Porter?

This album contains a barrage of wild studio tricks, varied instrumenation (including a full orchestra on a couple of tracks) and catchy songs. As David Gouldstone tells in his interesting book that analyses EC's lyrics, "Man Out of Time," some critics felt that the big productions obscure rather than illuminate the songs. While the hooks are catchy, the lyrics are often very challenging, but not as depressing as EC's most introspective. This is a worthy album full of interesting sounds, but make sure that you buy the re-release (1995) on CD which has twice as many tracks, including the original 8-track version of "Shabby Doll" and the song, "Imperial Bedroom," written as a B-side after completion of the album. Give the album itself a few listens if it doesn't grab you straight away. One of his best, Ian Thomas.

Although "Man Out of Time" may be my all-time favorite E.C. song, it hardly carries the rest of this fairly weak album. "Beyond Belief" can be compared to a song like "The Greatest Thing", from the Punch the Clock album. Radio stations wanted it to be great, but it simply isn''t. Most faithful Elvis listeners feel that this is his best - not me. If you want his best get "My Aim is True", especially the version with the BONUS tracks.
