The first colaboration of Neil Finn, Paul Hester (both previously from Split Enz) and Nick Seymour. Recorded in L.A. by Mitchell Froom who played Keyboards and co-wrote "Something So Strong". C.D. has an extra track on it,"Can't carry on" which is very Split Enzish. Band title came form cramped living conditions whilst recording album, despite record company pressure to be called, "Neil Finn and the......" "Hole in the River" is one of the best sounds on the album, and concerns the telephone call Neil had from his Dad one day, about the suicide of his sister (Neils Aunt).

A great album that I was absolutely obsessed with when I was 16, this was the first effort by Neil, Paul and Nick. The song "Mean To Me" was written by Neil after an obsessive fan cornered him after a concert to tell him about her horrible life ("Now her parents are divorced/and her friend's committing suicide") , and he was unnerved by the whole experience. Another song "World Where You Live" was written in their lawyer's flat in L.A. (which led to the band's name), and talks about them being "...strangers here/on our way to some other place". Definately worth repeated listening!

This album took a good 3 or 4 months to grow on me back in 1986, but since then it's been a steady favorite. Every song is memorable and worthy of classic status. In my opinion the best, most solid effort until Together Alone. These songs are as fresh today as a decade ago.
