Comments for DeBurgh, Chris, Spainish Train and other Stories

Spanish Train, Chris de Burgh's second album, will probably be what he is remembered for 50 years from now. That and the vile Lady in Red. It established him in far off fields including Canada, the then communist Eastern Europe and the then apartheid South Africa (where the album was initially banned before a re-release as Lonely Sky and other stories.) In fact this album holds some sort of record as one of the most bootlegged albums of its day. The title track is undoubtedly the highlight of the opus and never fails to stir the blood especially live, where Chris's intro's have become somewhat of a trademark and the stuff of legend. But it in the mellower moments that the real quality of this album shines. Lonely Sky is probably one of his finest ballads, and Just another poor boy is a standout. This song became a freedom anthem in many corners of the world with its themes of oppression and the struggle for freedom of expression. Not forgetting the Christmas evergreen A Spaceman came travelling. This song has been rehashed several times by A&M in various live versions around the festive season, but none to me captures the song better than here on this recording. In the 20 years since this album's release Chris' voice has changed sufficiently that maybe he can't nail some of the notes as once he could. The change of mood offered by The painter and of course Patricia the Stripper shows just how multidimensional Chris's talent is. Patricia became another party favourite across the planet, with a lot of people probably not even recognizing the CdeB of ballad fame as the artist. All in all a seminal work and a fitting memorial.

Probabely Chris De Burgh's best album, and what he will be remebered for. The title song is an outstanding and unique piece. The track "Patricia the Stripper", although is a novelty song, but is a defenate sign of Chris' singing and song writing talents. If you want an album that you would listen to forever, buy this one!

This is in my opinion CDeB's best album. I am 17 and the only one I know that owns this album. It belonged first to my brother, and since I first found it in his collection (and swiped for my own), I have been hooked to the beautiful lyrics and sounds. I own many of his albums, but there is none other that holds such a dear place in my heart. Although I do hold a certain nostalgic attachment to this tape, my prayers would be answered if I found a CD version so that I wouldn't have to worry any longer about wearing out the source of my favorite music.
