Comments for Deep Purple, Concerto for Group and Orchestra

Contary to most people''s views, IN Rock was not the debut album by MK II Deep Purple. This album was. An album which combined a composition by Jon Lord that would include a classical orchestra and the almighty Deep Purple. From someone who generally finds a lot of progressive rock pretentious, this is a suprisingly amibitious (maybe too over-ambitious) piece that sometimes really cooks here. This is mainly due to Ritchie Blackmore, who does some of his best soloing here ever. Ritchie, young and in his prime, turns up the heat every time it is his chance to solo. And Ian Gillan gives one of his most beautiful vocal performances in his solo vocal moment. The whole effort goes on bit a too long and eventually runs out of gas. It is also nowhere near the classics that MK II Deep Purple have produced. But credit is due for these guys.
