Tis album is an under rated. The songs have a nice edge to them ... 'like iron and steel with a big bouquet of roses hanging down from the heavens to the ground'

Very under rated! Dylan's songwriting is superb; especially Never Say Goodbye. Robertson shows power in the overdub for Going Going Gone. Chock full of gems.

this album merely leads into the majestic blood on the tracks. yes, there are some good moments, noticeably "wedding song" and "dirge"

Planet Waves is, I think, a transitional album from the down home, country, family man works that included Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait and New Morning and his next, critically acclaimed period of such masterworks as Blood on the Tracks and Desire. Despite the presence of the Band, the album sounds a little bit unfinished and tentative. There are, however, some wonderful songs here: "Forever Young" may be Dylan''s most unabashedly sunny song, but it''s not sentimental or soft. I think it is a genuine masterpiece, something akin to a prayer for a child or a loved one. "Dirge" is completely different in tone and substance and works on lots of levels- most obviously a lover''s bitter lament, but it also touches deep wellsprings of spiritual longing. I never fail to feel intensely when I hear this song. Other standouts include the almost desperate lovesong, "The Wedding Song", "Hazel", and "Going, Going, Gone." This is a fine, often overlooked album.
Actually an Dylan with The Band album. Not his best but worth getting if only for Forever Young.
