Comments for Dylan, Bob, Another Side of Bob Dylan

Truly a fine album from the greatest musician of the twentieth century. Ballad In Plain D just seethes with anger at the Rotollo's for packing Suze off to Europe. Spanish Harlem Incident is the most underrated song on this album. It represents poetic genius that is not often equalled, even by Dylan. Also great as a last gasp of acoustic music before the long period of electric rock. While I'm not badmouthing BoB, BiaBH, and H61R, i really feel Dylan lost something when he went electric, and I don't think he has found it again yet, though he seems to try with GAIBTY. A classic album.

I forgot to correct the submitter's error. It is Dylan's 4th album, not third.

"Another Side of Bob Dylan" is far different from the previous three L.P.'s in that it is not filled with protest songs, and politically aware folk, but Rock and Roll. Although the only instruments used are a guitar, piano, and harmonica, the songs themselves are Rock and Roll songs, with Rock and Roll themes to them. That is why they were so widely covered by Rock and Roll artists; the most famous being The Byrds, who covered All I Really want to do, Chimes of Freedom, and Spanish Harlem incident, (plus Mr. Tambourine Man) on one L.P.! The Best song in this set is by far Myuu My Back Pages.

this album would be an indisputable masterpiece with only half of these masterful songs present.there is enough emotional, intellectual, and spiritual content to last a lifetime.this music is as majestic, and revelatory as when it was released 35 years ago and will continue to be in the next millenium.

I must admit, Another Side of Bob Dylan has never been among my favorites. I think it sounds like he rushed it out. I don't think his singing, nor his writing is up to par on this one though there are some gems. "Ballad in Plain D" is one of Dylan's worst songs- it is a bitter, small minded diatribe- there is nothing artistic about it. On the other hand, the album might be worth having for "My Back Pages" a reflective look at an earlier, more judgmental time in Dylan's life (though that judgmentalism would return). "Chimes of Freedom" is also a great song of compassion and passion. This album was certainly a transition work, signalling a turn inward and toward a more surreal way with lyrics.
