Comments for Dylan, Bob, New Morning

New Morning may not be a great Dylan album but it is good, and I find myself still taking it out, periodically, and playing it. It is a fairly positive album. "New Morning" is an outstanding song, full of hope, and the simple joy of just being alive. There are a lot of servicable numbers here such as "The Locusts Sang". There are a couple of odd ducks- "If Dogs Run Free", one of Dylan''s few forays into jazz and not particularly successful, and "Winterlude", a waltz. I enjoy ''Wnt to See the Gypsey" for its great rhythm and sense of mystery, though I couldn''t say what the song is "about." "If Not For You" is Lovely", though sometimes it sounds trite. "Father of Night" is a beautiful prayer and why not celebrate it as such, while "Sign on the Window" is the real gem. This song is filled with doubt, longing, questioning, tenderness, and exudes mystery as well, and don''t most of Dylan''s greatest songs share those qualities?
Perhaps his most positive record. Dylan writes of family and his happy quiet life in Woodstock. Not his best record, but fun to listen to. "If Not For You" and "New Morning" are standouts that rank with his best songs. The last 2 tracks are strange religious tunes.
