Great stuff! There's a lot of energy and it's focused well, like a laser beam. Mark Smith was an important stylist and he sounds great on here. Some of the lyrics are ridiculous, but some like "Frightened" work perfectly. This deserves to be heard. It's one of the many great unheard albums of our time that with the right amount of media attention might have been considered seminal rock n' roll. P.S. - "Various Times" is great in my opinion, one of my favorites on the album. And note that "Rebellious Jukebox" pretty much sums up the band's direction!

One of the finest LPs ever made - can still remember the first time I heard it, for it's one of those tremendous uncategorizable LPs that utterly floors a listener. Essential listening, and not a bad starting place for a Fall neophyte (I'd say check the early stuff out, then progress from there....)

I couldn''t agree more. I''ve listened to it more than any other album by any artist, and for those new fall fans that have not heard the vocal power of a sober Smith should pick up the re-issue without delay.
Originally released in 1978, this is a wonderful snapshotof the early Fall. Mark E. Smith, the leader of the Fall,is one of the most unique vocalists and lyricists ofthe past twenty years; his speaking/ranting/singing styleis the kind that you either love or hate. The bandranges from raw punk to poppier numbers, all propelledby MES`s wordplay. An essential part of the late `70sBritish music scene, the Fall to this day are producingwonderful albums for those who enjoy a bit of challengein their listening. Some U.S. pressings of this C.D. remove "Mother-Sister!"and "Industrial Estate" and replace them with "VariousTimes", although this is not reflected on the back of the CD. Check the catalog number!
