Comments for Foxx, John, Metamatic

E-MAIL: sedm0136@ox.ac.uk
This is an album based around very basic synth sounds, with Foxx's vocals, which are characteristically liberal as to the exact note he "should" be singing. The real bonus though comes with what he sings. He brings across very well the surrealistic world in which identity is diffused and has an eye for admirable detail. Classic Foxx, in fact.

this album is a classic! I believe john was into j.g. ballard quite heavily and it shows... as per the last comments regarding his voice, well it pretty much fits with the music and words because its pretty de-tached in its viewpoints... mark b. 3/31/96

Yes, Metamatic is a classic album, and certainly vies for the title of the best album ever in my opinion. It just contains such intense atmospheres, many of which are realted to events that are personal, but the music contains so much. It is so bleak and bare, powerful and minimalist. I have no objections to John's singing, it is part of the album, atonal electronic themes abound. He is in fact a very good singer -see The Garden/Golden Section. The metamatic style b-sides are also, excellent - 'this city' is one of his best. -possibly the ultimate evocation of urban solitude. 10/10 definately

I remember the first time I heard this album...I was instantly mesmerised & entranced by the driving remoteness and alienation of the music/style-I was converted...but then I was an impressionable 14 year old in 1980. How things change however...nostalgia wise I still adore this album but please if you can't see how dated and crap it sounds then get a life, I'm sure that even Mr Foxx himself must cringe at the plink-plonk synthetics and dire lyrics.

Back again...the only tracks that have stood the test of time are 'Blurred Girl', '030' and 'He's a Liquid'...the latter for its humour and the former for their drifting beauty and urgency. By the way I still enjoy John Foxx, listen to his music regularly, have seen him live and think that both his and Ultravox's work is hugely underated.

It`s by far his best work....I`M glad he left Ultravox to produce this masterpiece on his own! A scale of 10 is not enough. A big regret by me is that I`ve never seen him play live as these acts seldom make it to Denmark...though I hope to correct it by hopefully attending future concerts in UK which coincides with The Pleasures of Electricity release. Oh and BTW I don`t think the album(Metamatic) has lost any of it`s "grace" or sounds dated...

This album is still on my shelf because it is an original and creative musical and artistic statement. The focus is on technology, J.G. Ballard, minimalism, surrealism, art (it is still one of my favorite covers!),psychedelics, atmosphere, good writing - not to mention the amazing production value that was Virgin records back then. I could go on and on . . .
Last 6 tracks on CD release only.
