Comments for Lanois, Daniel, For The Beauty Of Wynona

Darker and edgier than "Acadie," with less overt folk influence. Sounds a lot like if you dreamed up different cuts from U2's Lanois- produced Achtung Baby -- not in a derivative way. Some jarring, searing songs with well done vocals, atmospheric guitars, interesting rhythms and bass work that sounds like its welling up from a maelstrom (Beatrice)...oh yeah, and a couple of beautiful acoustic tunes (The Collection of Marie Claire, Rocky World).

lanois is great but some of his stuff seems overproduced and less natural. I bet the live album that is very rare is probably his best because it;s not overmixed, etc. listen to dave mathews bootlegs from early 1992-3 to hear the band cover "The Maker"

Having recently seen Lanois live, I can vouch for the fact that he can reproduce most of the effects on this album in a live setting. What I found most striking is the essential presence of Darryl Jones'' high harmony backing vocals (the bass player). Lanois only had a three piece band, but they sounded like at least six. There is a noticeable gospel influence in his work, probably because it is such a spiritual calling for him. If you haven''t had the opportunity to listen to this album with the benefit of a subwoofer system, you haved missed a great deal of his magic. Also, the new EmmyLou Harris album "Wrecking Ball" is produced by Daniel Lanois. It has himself, Darryl Jones, Larry Mullen Jr, and Malcolm Burn all over it. Highly Recommended.
Track 11 Sleeping In the Devils Bed was also released on The Until The End Of The World soundtrack. If you like this albumor the the sound track I think you would like the other. DanielLanois is an Acadian has some french tracks. Also recorded Acadie in 1989. Has worked with Peter Gabriel and U2
