Comments for McLean, Don, Rivers of Love

E-MAIL: a.howard@reading.ac.uk
The River of Love is Don's best album of new material for many years. It's an album about Don's life today and he seems very happy....for a change!! The album has now been released worldwide and by the end of April 1996 the first single, Better Still, should hit the charts. The album also features Chet Atkins.

I have nearly everything Don McLean has done in the past and had the great pleasure of hearing him in concert. Therefore it is a great disappointment to listen to his latest album, River of Love. Turgid, vapid, stale, cutesy, ridden with cliche, unimaginative. If McLean is so enamoured of the joy of domestic life and these songs are meant to be a reflection of that, perhaps we would all be better served if he spent his time playing with children and necking with his wife. When I contrast the creativity of Narcissisma, the wallop of Great Big Man, the poignance of Crossroads, the power of Believers, I am disappointed--indeed appalled--by the diminishment of his creative abilities. of the joys of marriage and parenthood, perhaps he should confine himself to playing with his children and necking with his wife. The music, the lyrics, the presentation are simplistic even insulting to the listeners spoiled by his earlier masterpieces.

I suppose Everlyn has right to be dissapointed . How dare Mr McLean sing about joy and happiness. Don stopped being the spokesperson for gloom 20 years ago . He has grown as a musician and unlike many of his fellows has refused to compromise himself by doing the expected . Lets look at some of his recent material : To Have and To hold - Perfect Love What will the World be like Love in My heart The Christmas Albums Everlyn - open your mind and enjoy - if the old material is all you want , be grateful it's now all available on CD now .

I like headroom much more. This album sound a little too much "light weight"

Only one decent song on the album - the title track. The rest is appalling. Don't pretend you like it for the sake of it. If you buy it, Don will keep recording more drivel in the hope that someone likes it out there.

Whilst not entirely agreeing with my unauthorised user previously I must say I was disappointed with this album. Only the title track is vintage Mclean.. Still I hope he bounces back with some quality original material that he is capable of.
This is an album of all new original material to be released USA June/July 1995
