Comments for McLean, Don, Homeless Brother

E-MAIL: phogart@vertex.ucls.uchicago.edu
"La La Love You," "Homeless Brother," and "The Legend of Andrew McGrew" are all outstanding songs. "Homeless Brother" depicts the plight of our nation's disadvantaged citizens. Although all the songs on this album are (independently) excellent, they all sound a little too much alike.

I am a 29 year oldmale, and I have been listening to "Homeless Brother" since I was in my early teens. I was particularly excited to finally get this music on CD, but the cover art is best appreciated on the album version. This record contains some of Don''s best songwriting and also some very sweet vocals. My favorites songs are "Winter Has Me In It''s Grip"; "Did You Know"; "Homeless Brother"; and Don''s cover of the classic church song "Crying In The Chapel". Actually, all of these songs are classics, and they are certainly among Don''s very best. This is a wonderful record to listen to by the warmth of a fire in the winter, considering that the lead track, "Winter Has Me In It''s Grip", sets the mood for the entire album. It is a quiet, gentle record, with lyrics that will have you feeling as if Don is singing for your ears only. His acoustic guitar playing is exceptionally good here, especially on "Tangled", and his melodies are as usual very intriguing. I live in America, and had to get my CD as an import through BGO records, but if you can track down the album version you wont be worse off--however you will miss some great liner notes by John Tobler. This is a very special album to me; I''ve loved it since I first heard it and I have tried to learn to play the songs myself, although without a songbook (hint, hint) it''s difficult. Get "Homeless Brother"--it''s worth any price. Scott Porter, 11/6/96, Dayton Ohio USA
