Comments for Rush, Tom, The Circle Game

Rush's voice takes these songs (mostly by other artists who were popular then and now) and gives them royal treatment with that magical voice of his. I bought this album when it first arrived on the scene, and about a year ago I took it out of mothballs. Even with the pops and hisses Tom still has it all. You can't help but feel what the writers of these songs intended- no one has the soulful emotional style of TR. If you too put this one away, take it out! Play it! I guarntee satisfaction. And if Tom is in the neighborhood, go listen! I sure hope this beauty is on CD somewhere. By the way- Tom did write one song on the album.

I believe the actual release date for this album was 1968. At least that was when I bought my copy. It was a real breakthrough for Tom, who had previously released a number of excellent roots/blues albums and had a strong following in Cambridge Mass. This album (with a cover photo by Linda Eastman (now Mrs. McCartney, of course)featured several great songs by three artists who were just about to become hugely popular: Joni Mitchell (who has one album out), James Taylor (who's Apple debut was several months away) and Jackson Browne, who didn't release his own first solo effort for about another 18 months. "Urge for Going," by Joni, is atruly fanstastic song that I don't believe she herself has ever recorded. Same for the Jackson Brown contribution. All in all, Circle Game is one of the great albums of all time.

Yes, _The Circle Game_ was released in 1968, and it has recently been rereleased on CD (Elektra). 'Tis a thing of beauty; wonderful arrangements, great songs, and, above all, that relaxed and sensitive, yet extremely powerful voice! I might treasure the 1970 album _Tom Rush_ (Columbia) a bit more, but they are both in my top twenty.
