Comments for Schola Discantus, French Sacred Music of the 14th Century

These early settings of the Mass Ordinary, presumably originatingat the Papal chapel at Avignon, display a wide variety of stylisticcharacteristics, and some of them require singers of great virtuosity.Apart from their considerable historical and musical interest, thesemovements retain a capacity to move the modern-day listener deeply -- this is the sacred music that was sung at the time of the Black Death in Europe (1348-51). A special feature of this CD is the possibility for interactive programming of the tracks. Complete program notes andand suggestions for interactive listening are enclosed.Digitally recorded 1994 at Emmanuel Church, Boston
