Comments for Sebadoh, The Freed Weed

The Freed Weed is a composite of two early Sebadoh albums, Weed Forestin` and The Freed Man. Recorded entirely on 4-track, it`s about as messy and lo-fi as you could ask for--but that`s one of it`s charms. The WF half is all Lou, alone, being mopey and introspective--at his best, in other words--and the songs are interspersed with weird noisy asides, tape loops and sound collages. Taken on it`s own, WF is my favorite album of all time--I`d recommend you listen to just those first 23 songs, in the dark, alone at night to get the full effect of it. As for the FM side, well, it has it`s moments, but it`s mostly goofy Eric Gaffney dominated stuff. If you like Beck`s One Foot in the Grave or Stereopathic Soulmanure then I`d definately recommend this; it combines the best of Grave`s folkish pop sensibility and Soulmanure`s oddball-noise goofiness.
