Comments for Barenaked Ladies, Maybe You Should Drive

E-MAIL: tgraham@fox.nstn.ca
Put away your Kraft Dinner (Kraft Macaroni & Cheese to you Yanks!), the BnL have gone and got all serious on us. Actuall this isn't such a bad thing, although you may be reading a lot of bad press about their "transformation". I think that this album is pretty darn good. So what if there is no "Yoko Ono" or "ifeyehada $1,000,000.00", lets let these guys mature. Compared song for song, Mabey You Should Drive, is actually better than Gordon. Just one problem though, you nkow anyone in the market for 296,195 boxes of Kraft Dinner.

This is a tremendous follow up to their first album "Gordon". While a little more toned down, the calmness is a refreshing change. "Jane", "A", and "Life in a Nutshell" are the best of the lot, though the others are solid as well. The Barenaked Ladies deliver again.

Crap. Plain and simple.

After achieving big success, some bands offer up more of the same; others run in a completely opposite direction. Unfortunatly, the Barenaked Ladies opted for the later. Its not that "Maybe You Should Drive" is a horrible album; its just rather dull and utterly charmless, two things that the public were not expecting from the band. OMost of the album is forgettable folk-pop, only "Alternative Girlfriend" serves as a reminder that, at one point in their career, this band could actually write lyrics with witty social commentary.

Witty and thought provoking! "Maybe You Should Drive" is every bit as good if not better than "Gordon"! Aside from the commercial hits the BNL offer a wonderful lyrical mix of humor, satire, childlike innocence and social commentary in every song on this album. Some albums grow on you, and although you "Hear" more each time the album is played, it grabs you from the start! A definite 10!

I loved GOrdon and was hoping to hear another CD that I couldn't get enough of. After the first listen i was very disappointed and I have forced myself to listen to it more since and i hate it more each time. What happened to their wit and exciting rifs that typified GOrdon? Please guys, don't succomb to the bad music trend these days, I need something refreshing BnL was it.

I heard this album before I heard Gordon and I was hooked! "A" is an excellent song, as is "Jane", "Alternative Girlfriend" and ALL the other songs. Those individuals who mock this band and it's music simply don't have an open mind and aren't listening to the music in the sense that it should be listened to.... with a good sense of humor and your inner child close at hand. This band serves to remind us what it's like to be a kid and HAVE FUN!!!!! That's what their name even represents... a child laughing when they say something like "bakenaked ladies". Lighten up people and have some fun.... these are the guys to help you in that area. BTW... these are some of the nicest, down-to- earth guys you'd ever want to meet. They really care about what their fans have to say and think. As for the mac & cheese throwing at concerts... the cheese ruins their equipment and the boxes hurt when unconsiderate people throw them at the guys. Besides that, they're great! Buy any BNL CD and you won't go wrong!

I defy anyone to listen to this CD and not be humming "Jane" for the next month. I can't get that damned song out of my head.....but that's a good thing.

An intimate and soothing album...not at fun as Gordon, but as far as musicianship goes...this album is prime. I''ll give it a B+
A good second effort from Bare Naked Ladies. Saw them at Spring Break in Daytona, FL
