Comments for Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

Well worth the $15.99 I paid. The best SP record yet, due in no small part to the fact that it was co-produced by Flood and Alan Moulder.

this album is probably better than siamese dream. I never thought that I could say that, but it is true :) there are too many excellent songs on this double album, and they show the new level of songwriting excellence that billy has attained. the best songs imho are where boys fear to tread, to forgive and porcelina. but that isn't where the fun ends. the good thing about it is that mellon collie doesn't really have a clunker track, unless you really dislike we only come out at night, which is a little on the lame side. all in all a damn fine effort, and maybe the best record of the 90s

I must say, that this cd has rarely left my stereo - is it possible ossible that Siamese has been surpassed? Well, I guess it is a matter of time....IMHO, Love is one of the greatest Pumpkins songs, as is Tonight, Tonight - hell the whole album is smegging great.... PS, try playing Farewell and Goodnight followed by Mellon Collie ;)

This is the best album I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. Ever since I purchased this album, I cannot keep my friends away from my house. I would like to say hi to all my friends, and say that that anyone reading this should visit the pumpkins home page and check it out. Hi Mom, look I am on the Internet. And hello to Reylick, and one more thing not related to the album, I have a friend Pat that looks just like Shawn! Thanks to all. Drop me a letter at JokerN@aol.com, my name is Pillsberry.

Many non-Pumpkin eaters claim there are too many tracks on this ditty... but it turns out really great!!! I paid only $21.99 Canadian for it... Almost 2 for the price of one... Anyway, It's really worth it!!!

I absolutely just love this album. I never really started liking SP untill I heard "Bullet with Butterfly Wings". I Also like "1979". I don't really have the money to spend on it, but my girlfriend got it for christmas so that's pretty cool.

I would hate to break the trend of support here, but I have to admit, the first time I heard this album, I hated it. I thought it was whiny, screeching, and generally unpleasant. I thought it rambled, and that there were far too *few* out- takes and that the album would have generally been better if it had been only a single CD, and with all the static effects and screaming (which I thought was completely un-Corgan and un-SP) removed. Then I started to like it. I began to realize that the effects added to the sourness and bittersweetness of the album, which I had just then begun to appreciate. It is, after all, quite melancholy. The current standing verdict is that there are definitely some *awesome* tracks on this album, and some extremely creative twists. (The beginning of Where Boys Fear to Tread, the occasional digital effects, and Tales Of A Scorched Earth, which I couldn't believe the first time I heard it ...) But then, there is still quite a bit I really don't understand ...
E-MAIL: xoruglm@imsa.edu
(continued) ... like why they'd choose to end such a diverse and oscillating album with 5 straight soft songs, which seemed to contradict everything else they'd sung/played thus far. (Maybe that's why they did it.) I also don't understand why Corgan has taken up screaming ... I think his music's fine without it. But then, it does add a nice (necessary) touch on Bodies, one of my favorite tracks. So right now ... I really don't know what to make of this album.

Does anyone know where I can get a vinyl edition?? (in NOrWAY the vinyl was outdated Oct 9th; i.e. some fortnight before it was at all released!!) Absolutely a masterpiece; my #1 track must be 1979 or Porcelina.
E-MAIL: larsdd@deko.no
wonderful loud quiet music. beautiful....
E-MAIL: kabest@rs6000.cmp.ilstu.edu
I seemed to like the first disc much better than the second, but each has very some good songs. Some of my favorites are "Bullet with butterfly wings", "To forgive", and "Thirty three"

E-MAIL: kielnski@bucknell.edu
As good as this album is, after hearing the b-sides to the first three singles, (Bullet, 1979, Zero), I wish Corgan would have chosen to include "Said Sadly", "Cherry", "Ugly", "Believe", and "Pennies", getting rid of some marginal songs like "Tales From a Scorched Earth", "We Only Come Out at Night", "Beautiful", "Lily", and even "XYU". Who cares about diversity, I say just put out the best stuff. As is, I think Siamese Dream is more consistently good. If I had to chop MCIS down to 13 songs to compare it to SD, I'd go with 1) 1979, 2) Thirty-Three 3) Bullet With Butterfly Wings, 4) Galapagos, 5) Jellybelly, 6) Zero, 7) Believe, 8) In the Arms of Sleep, 9) To Forgive, 10) In the Eyes of Ruby, 11) Tonight, Tonight, 12) Muzzle, 13) either Porcelina, Here is no Why Bodies, Pennies, Cherry, Ugly, and By Starlight.

A good double album, but there are several 'b' material songs. Could have been a great single album. Nonetheless, worth the money, most songs are well written with depressing but beautiful lyrics.

I hate this album! Smashing Pumpkins suck! Billy Corgan is ugly, and he can't sing worth shit! If they got rid of him, maybe they could finally make some halfway decent music, but with his screeching, they are doomed to the land of Suck. And why the fuck did he shave his head? Wasn't he ugly enough? The only good thing about this band is James, he's cool. Corgan was right, he's a zero. And I don't see how anyone can stand the song "Tonight, Tonight!" It sucks! I don't understand why anyone would waste their money on something as shitty as this is. What a waste!

Easily and by far the best Smashing Pumpkins record to date. I think I would choose "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" as one of my "Desert Island Discs", it's that good!

friends, roman, countrymen, lend me your ears! i come to bury caesar, not to praise him. the evil that men do lives after them, the good is oft interred with their bones. so let it be with caesar. the noble brutus hath told you caesar was ambitious. if it were so it was a grievous fault, and grievously hath caesar answered it. here, under leave of brutus and the rest(for brutus is an honorable man-so are they all, all honorable men) come i to speak in caesar's funeral. he was my friend, kind and just to me. but brutus says he was ambitious, and brutus is an honorable man. he hath brought many captives home to rome, whose ransoms did the general coffers fill. did this in caesar seem ambitious? when that the poor have cried, caesar hath wept. ambition should be made of sterner stuff. yet brutus says he was ambitious, and brutus is an honorable man. you all did see that on the lupercal, i thrice presented him a kingly crown, which he did thrice refuse. was this ambition? but brutus says he was ambitious, and sure he is an honorable man.i speak not to disprove what brutus spoke, but here i am to speak what i do know: you all did love him once, not without cause. what cause withholds you then to mourn for him? o, judgement, thou art fled to brutish beasts and men have lost their reason. bear with me, my heart is in the coffin there with caesar, and i must pause till it come back to me.

The best album of the century. A monumental masterpiece. BUT: It could have been even better if it had been a tripple-CD with all the excellent b-sides!!!
E-MAIL: porclina@aol.com
Okay, so this is the album that divided the world into two groups : fans prior to MCIS and fans after MCIS. But I can definitely see why. Its an incredible work of art and the sounds for each song are really original and the lyrics are....nice.
E-MAIL: Porclina@aol.com
Oh yes, and my favorite songs from this one are as follows: To Forgive-the story of my life, and Porcelina-which was written in my honor:)

I want to smash the pumpkins into small piles of putrid debris (they even wrote a game about this, no kidding). billy corgan is a miserable little twerp but at least he's honest about himself - he describes himself on the song ZERO. That's what i rate this album.
E-MAIL: Elrod_of_Melvinbone@Seersucker.com
Well I'm with Adgy and Pogie, I guess (not good company, but there you go). The Smashing Pumpkins only have two tricks and, unfortunately, singing isn't one of them! I've tried to give this band a decent appreciation but there is so little to admire! When are their fans ever going to qualify what it is that they like. The iconography (cover artwork, band costumes, etc.) are great, but that's it! When you think of the great bands that Billy Corgan thinks he's fit to compare himself too, it's tragic. Most great bands are there for a reason, but some plainly aren't! There are plenty of modern bands that are vastly superior to these guys and way more obscure (should I name ten?). I just don't know ...
E-MAIL: POGIE
Well,Elrod,thanx-but I''m not a fish,as you might think. I''m a 53-year old grey male koala whose real name is Richard Aloysius Thompson.I have a wife,Linda, and three cubs,Edward Aleister and Alexander.I''m a rocker whose music is a cross between Don Henley, the Scorps and Dire Straits...... .....er,throw in Pearl Jam for good luck.I love you! P.S.Speaking of Elrod, did you have J.R.R.Tolkien in mind?
