Sondheim`s second collaboration with writer/director James Lapine, a retellingof classic storybook tales which combines Cinderella, Little Red Ridinghood,Jack and the Beanstock, Rapunzel and others. Act I sets the characters on aquest for their hearts` desires, while Act II deals with what happens AFTER "happily ever after." Stars Bernadette Peters as the Witch, Johanna Gleason asthe Baker`s Wife, Chip Zien as the Baker, Tom Aldridge as the Narrator, Robert Westenberg as Cinderella`s Prince/Wolf, Kim Crosby as Cinderella, Danielle Ferland as Little Red Ridinghood and Merle Louise as Cinderella`s Mother/Giant/Cinderella`s Mother. What starts out as a lighthearted tale comes to explorethe theme of togetherness as as way to fight society`s ills. Contains the notable songs "Children Will Listen" and "No One Is Alone."
