After 15 years he's still the best musician ever...
E-MAIL: mfine@telis.org
Mercury Falling is Sting's fifth original solo album and he has proven to the world of music that he is still one of the best there is. With leaps and bounds, he has once again produced what par for him but groundbreaking in all other respects, everything you would excpect, attributed to his incomparable lyrical and songwriting ability, and the team of extremely talented musicians who play with Sting. Even though it's not as powerful as 1991's "The Soul Cages" and doesn't have the clever lyric in most tracks of 1993's "Ten Summoner's Tales," there are still a few surprises: the off beat of I Hung My Head and the double sidedness of I Was Brought To My Senses. But the biggest pleasure of all is La Belle Dame Sans Regrets, sung entirely in French and backed by the nicest bossa nova backdrop this side of Marseilles and Dominic Miller's unmatched ability to conquer any style of guitar. Kenny Kirkland shines on the keyboards, while the versatile Vinnie Colaiuta can give Stewart Copeland a run for his money any day. Branford Marsalis also returns for a couple of numbers, you'll hear the sax before you even know what songs he's on. The country feel of "I'm So Happy, I Can't Stop Crying", the soothing "Valparaiso" (reminiscent of 1991's "Why Should I Cry For You?) and "The Hounds of Winter", among others, make Mercury Falling another slam dunk for Sting. Perhaps his most SEDUCTIVE offering - reflects his maturity as a man in love with life. STING deserves the pleasures of a balanced existence and we, fortunately, reap the benefits of this balanced production. He's a Poet, not simply lyricwriter; who leaves me breathless. The surprising ingenuity of chords continues. Mecury Falling (and the BRAVO interview) grants us further glimpses of what we've known all along - STING is as close to musical perfection as any, and I'm certain the seduction will continue!!!

I love Sting. I think Soul Cages and Nothing Like the Sun are two of greatest albums ever released. But for some reason, I loathe Mercury Falling. His singing doesn't sound as good as it did on previous albums. The music isn't catchy or even particularly intricate (why does Sting write bad country and mowtown-style music when he can write just about anything else and make it sound fantastic?). The only thing I like about the album are the lyrics on some songs (I'm so Happy... and I Was Brought to My Senses are particularly affecting). What can I say, Sting's new album just doesn't connect with me the way that previous albums did. However, I have yet to read a negative review of Mercury Falling, so perhaps something is wrong with me. Perhaps Sting continues to be the musical genius that I thought he was before I bought his new album.

I think that Mercury Falling is one of Sting's better albums. Although I would not put it on the same level as Ten Summoner's Tales, I think that this album speaks to me. I kind of like Sting's "country" feel to some of his songs on this album. Overall, I would say that this is one of my favorite albums I have bought this year, and surely one of my favorite Sting albums.

I still think Sting is one of the better artists that has ever lived. Who else do you can mix his smooth sounding voice with a jazzy sound which I love and also a country atmosphere in his latest album.I din't like Mercury Falling when I first heard it but just like the other Sting CD's the more i listen to them the more I love them!!!!

I was very disappointed by this album. The songs, for the most part, are simplistic, both in music and in lyrics. Sting's songs are known for their surprising melodic twists and variety of textures; each of these songs, while different, is essentially a one-idea work. There are no "B" sections. All of this album could not taken more than a few weeks to write... I hope Sting will put a lot more effort into his next album, and that isn't the start of some trend.

I am a HUGE Sting fan. I worship the ground that he walks on, and would offer to bear his children if I were female. However, I was deeply disappointed with his previous album (10 Summoner's Tales), and even more disgusted with Mercury Falling. I don't understand him anymore. Why does he have to throw in the token Country/Western Steel Guitar song? Why does he not use any of the depth and talent he showed on Nothing Like The Sun? I sure hope he snaps out of his slump soon...

Having been a Sting fan for years, I was a little disappointed in Mercury Falling. I am not a music critic nor a muscian. I Just love the mans music. I do not think of him as a pop artist or a muscian, rather, I think of him as a story teller. I look forward to every new story he tell's no matter what the music in the background.

Yo Sting! What happened to you man! Mercury Falling sucks...

First of all i would just like to correct you, B.J. Cole does not play any "memphis horns", infact there is no such instrument on the face of planet earth. He plays pedal steel. Then, here's my comment on this record. Much of what's said above is in fact the truth, this just is not Sting's standard of records, BUT! There are some highlights, for example "I hung my head", this song is a 9/8 beat song. I've never heard anyone master this kind of really "weird" beat, and still make it sound natural. That is one of Sting's biggest qualitys, his musicianship he's really a musician, not just a pop-icon. Another highlight is the song "I was brought to my senses", another of those strange beats (7/8). I really love the acoustic sound to this song, just this song is worth bying the record for! "The hounds of winter" is another masterpiece, do I need to say anything more, it's Sting at his best. I've got the feeling that he did'nt give the supperb musicians in the band as much freedom on this record as he did on "Ten summoner's tales", on some of the songs they simply plays to less. And anyone who have heard, for example Vinnie before knows that he do not play less if he don't have to. Still the record is truly worth bying, but if you don't have the previous records, BUY THEM FIRST!

Okay, we all know that Sting is a great musician. But I honestly think that 10 Summoners tales and Mercury Falling are vastly inferior to his first three works. Soul Cages was (in my mind, at least) the best, but Dream of Blue Turtles and Nothing like the Sun were also unbelievable. The sappy sentimentality of "Fields of Gold" just doesn't meet the standards that he set in songs like "They Dance Alone,"Fortress Around Your Heart," "Russians," etc. His new stuff is flat and unispiring, a skilled and beatiful package containing very little of substance inside. I must admit that I do like some of his new songs, like "Hounds of Winter" and "You Still Touch Me," but by and large, he just isn't as good. Maybe he needs a little more angst in his life.

I was a little surprised the first time I listened to this CD because it was so upbeat and spiritual. It seems that Sting has finally found happiness, and it's reflected in the songs on this CD. There are no dark, brooding songs about love lost, as there have been on previous Sting releases. Some people are of the opinion that in order to write good rock'n'roll the artist must be rebelling against something, and it's obvious that Sting no longer has anything to rebel against. Like other recording artists with longevity, Sting has grown up. All the tracks are varied and he seems to be dabbling in every music genre with great success. The backup musicians sound incredible, and the lyrics slide out of your speakers like melted butter. In this respect, Mercury Falling is classic Sting. I'm having a little problem getting used to Sting singing country and western, but it's only one song ("I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying"), and I have to admit he does it well. I love "All Four Seasons," it makes me smile everytime I hear it. This is a great CD to listen to on a summer day, but if you're just getting into Sting, I would suggest buying one of his earlier CD's first because it seems like he's trying to find a new style, and he hasn't quite found it yet. I would definitely recommend this CD, it's extremely easy on the ears (and the cover isn't too hard on the eyes, either).

I must admit when I first listened to the album I was disappointed and bored. However, after seeing him perform those songs in concert, I haven't been able to take Mercury Falling out of my CD player. I would highly recommend the album to those which can acquire a taste for something new and unexpected, but you have to give it time to sink in. I promise it will grow on you as it did for me. My favorite songs include "Hounds of Winter" ,"Brought to my Senses" and "All Four Seasons". To everyone who says Sting should stick with his old style from his previous albums, you are closed minded. He is exactly the type of music artist who can break those style barriers and even make people like me (who hates country and jazz) to appreciate those genres of music. He is the best!!!!!

I have long been a listener of Sting and have always found that as soon as I thought I knew the man, he would go and change the way it sounded on his next record. I think that the man's talents have long gone unnoticed or at least have been underrated. He is truly a talent like no other. He alway breaking new musical grounds. I have found that his latest offering Mercury Falling to be no different. I do however find some of the comments from above alittle off. Anyone who says that this album is happy and upbeat obviously has not read the lyrics to his songs. I love this album, don't get me wrong, I listen to it on a daily basis and always find something else to be thankful for, but I would not call it happy. In fact I thought he might have lost his long love and was expressing his feelings about this though this release. I was glad to find out that this was not the case. Regardless of that, I will alway buy Sting's release into the future I hope that his hearing will hold out long enough so that he can continue to remain among the best in the world of music. For those of you riding the fence of whether or not to buy this cd, I highly recommend it. Give it time to sink in and I am sure you will find it among the very best of Sting. Thank You Sting for all of the fine works you have shared with this world Keep up the great work. Erik Johnson.

I think that Mercury falling is absolutely briliant! Perhaps the best album Sting has ever done. My favorite songs are The hounds of winter and I hung my head! Awesome! I hope that Sting will continue doing albums like this

This album shows a different side of Sting, my personal favorite is "I was Brought to my Senses"

To all of those brooding ghosts of Sting gone by I have this to say..."I say that friend of mine, he said,'You look different somehow.' I said, 'Everybody's got to leave the darkness sometime.'" taken from I'M SO HAPPY I CAN'T STOP CRYING - MERCURY FALLING.

correction: "I saw that friend of mine..." mot "I say that..."

Why do so many people have a problem with this album? It's great! No, it's not his best album. It might even be his worst. Butif it is, who else could make their "worst" album so good? Some of the songs have grown on me in an incredible way. I can't describe how much my opinion of "I'm So Happy" has gone up. When he sings "Everybody's got to leave the darkness sometime" I just about want to cry, it's so wonderful. And "I Was Brought To My Senses" is one of the most beautiful things he's done. There's something I like about every song, as usual. Still one of the best musicians and songwriters around.

Sting put together a fine musical offering in Mercury Falling. The musicians working with him combined with his "stuff" makes this another "keeper" for the Sting collection. Just one question, to settle a debate between my wife and me: In "I Hung My Head," was the shooting an accident? Thanks for your opinions, and who knows how to find out Sting's opinion?

This is an album that really grew on me, particularly after hearing the songs live in concert. Sting has never been afraid to experiment with different musical genres, and this is especially evident on this album. From the soulful "You Still Touch Me" to the country-flavored "I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying", this album displays the maturity in Sting's songwriting. Way to go, Sting!

I really LOVE "Mercury Falling".The best songs are, probably,"La belle dame sans regret" and "Let your soul be your pilot". I've been at the "Mercry Falling Tour" at the hallenstadion in Zurich, and Sting, live, is even greater. Daniele Malleo

Even if I like Soul Cages more, there are some great songs Mercury Falling. I agree with Daniele Malleo that La Belle Dame sans Regrets is the best song on it. I think it's one of his best songs ever. Like Daniele I saw Sting in zurich this year, and I'll never forgive him, for not playing this great song. It was a great concert with a great Vinnie Colaiuta, but I really missed my favorite song.

Some of you "fans" are either simply severely mistaken, or are smoking crack! "Mercury Falling" is an EXCELLENT CD! I find it to be on par with, or even superior to "Ten Summoner's Tales"! Both these albums are even better than his first three solo attempts (while they too are truly wonderful). Sting's work simply gets better as time progresses. "Mercury Falling" encompasses many different styles of music, and they are all very good! Also, "La Belle Dame Sans Regrets" is NOT the best song. It's probably the weakest. "I Was Brought To My Senses" is probably the best. Either that or "You Still Touch Me." And by the way, MF is NOT AN UPBEAT ALBUM! Think of "Lithium Sunset"! Listen to the lyrics... do you know what lithium is used for? Or "I Hung My Head"... NOT the most happy narrative that I've ever heard! I would recommend "Mercury Falling" to anybody...even 1st time Sting listeners. But, I must agree with some of you - Sting should stay away from country music! There is more than enough of that rubbish out there already! Aside from that, keep up the good work Sting!

i notice that most of sting's fans seemed disapointed in mercury falling. i can't see why. i love this it! of coarse i consider sting incapable of writing bad music. i've never heard a song written by sting (solo or w/the police) that i didn't love. i'll admit that i prefer the ...nothing like the sun album on most days, but on other days all i want to hear is the mercury falling cd. i especially enjoy the song brought to my senses and sting nailed a country style song with i'm so happy i can't stop crying. i never liked country before but add sting's voice to anything and i will love it. great job gordon!

Although this is a fantasic album(lyrically and musically), Sting should go back to his "Dream of the Blue Turtles" days, before he put many a person to Prozac addiction. I think he is TOO depressive these days, and while he wrote sad songs in "Turtles", they were not utterly depressing. He should rock likr he did in "Shadows in the Rain" and go back to the heart-rending "Moon over Bourbon Street". I still think he is good, but the public aggress that he is getting too down beat for his own good. Lighten up and have fun again, Sting! Otherwise, your next album will be sounds of your death throes while commiting suicide! I know your pain come from your parents death, but it's been years! Get over it!

I have been a fan of Sting since the first Police album, and I have to honestly say that I don't know where his artistic fire went. He seems bound and determined to make music that would seem at home only on elevators and NAC radio stations. I will agree that his lyrics are still intelligent. But he used to know how to write both a good pop song and a good rock song. He used to be able to say more with a much fewer words, and those words tended to have a lot fewer syllables. I think the end was that dreadful team-up with Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart. I mean, HUH?!? Soul Cages was a good record, if difficult to listen too. But since then he has been providing us with sugar-coated, VH-1 pablum. Nothing with the balls of his Police work, or the plain excellence of his first two solo efforts. And his best vocal performance would have to be Spread a Little Happiness from the Brimstone & Treacle soundtrack. If only for the sheer audacity.

Hey.. this is a great album. Though its kinda different from his earlier records.. I`m beginning to like it. The more I listen to it... the better it gets. Probably the lyrics speaks for my poor soul. Happy listening.

One of the best discs of 1996. "I Was Brought to My Senses" and "All Four Seasons" are classic Sting tunes. For the many people claiming Sting went too far in his experimentations, personally, I would prefer that to an artist reproducing similar material any day of the week. "Mercury Falling" is my favorite Sting album to date...he should be proud of this superior release.

In "Mercury Falling" Sting takes the Folk feel of "Ten Summoner''s Tales" one step further into an amazing variety of styles. He gives us down-to-earth modality in the intro to "I Was Brought to My Senses." He gives us soul (Let *it* Be Your Pilot) and he gives us country ("I''m So Happy . . ."), but without that annoying vocal twang. This is--no contest-- Sting''s best yet! BUY THIS STING ALBUM FIRST!
the artists that have beeb involved on the album are: Dominic miller (guitar), Kenny Kirkland (keyboard), Vinnie Calaiuta (drums), Branford Marsalis (sax), B.J. Cole (memphis horns), Katherine Tickell (pipe)

These are actually comments about Broken Music. I want to say that I very much appreciate reading about Sting and what he went through in becoming the person that he is today. I think all too often fans will look at musicians or athletes or actors and think if only I could be that person. I think that Sting's ability to talk about his "Broken Music" makes him more real to me. Thank you. I look forward to reading more. Mike
