Comments for The Yardbirds, Roger the Engineer

The correct title of track 1 is "Lost Woman" (various working versions of this song can be found on other Yard- birds collections, under the alternate title "Somebody to Love"). The correct spelling in the title of track 9 is "Omagara- shid" (if pronounced in a working-class English accent, it is revealed as a nasty phrase). This release includes both the stereo & mono mixes of the original tracks, which include many differences. The album was recorded in '66 at Advision Studio, London, at a high point in the band's zenith with Jeff Beck. The UK lp was actually titled simply "The Yardbirds" but became known by this title due to the front cover cartoon by drummer Jim McCarty. The US counterpart lp came with a different cover (a band photo collage), under the title of their current hit single, "OverUnderSidewaysDown" (and it did NOT include tracks 3,5,7,or8). Track 3 was Jeff Beck's debut as a vocalist, and his vocal was so bad that the voice track was later stripped off, leaving the instrumental track later issued as "Jeff's Blues" (see the other entry in this file).

The cream of the crop ... at least in one album form. Another version came out in 1987 from the LINE company, which follows the same running order and is a stereo version of the album, plus the two tracks from Keith Relf's first solo single, "Mr. Zero," and its flip, "Knowing." Bonus: Beck and Page are both playing guitar on "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago," while Beck is singing and on guitar while Page is doing the bass on its flip, "Psycho Daisies."
